If you are interested in spotting a variety of wildlife during your stay at Eden Rock, St Barths, you will quickly discover the island is home to a wide range of fascinating animals,
including the popular and fascinating frigatebird, or "Frigate Pelican. The males of the species are clearly visible on the island because of their bright red rectangular bag which is
inflated during the breeding season to attract a mate, and thus they seem bloated with pride! It is no wonder these flamboyant birds are so popular with bird watchers and nature lovers who
visit Eden Rock because it can be fascinating to take a look at the unusual lives of these unique birds.
Travel in
Frigate birds can often be seen swooping over the ocean off the coast of St Barths, riding warm updrafts to stay in the air. Because of their dependence on these warm thermal currents, their
appearance or disappear from a region in fact mean changing weather patterns. The birds do not swim, and can not walk, so they are about at the mercy of the wind more than most birds. They
can not even properly take off from a flat surface, but compensate for this extreme lack of mobility in the country with the largest wingspan to weight ratio of a bird, which she still up for
a period of time longer than one week! One week stay at Eden Rock, St Barths might seem much more comfortable than a week spent in the air, but it is perfectly adapted frigatebird up for long
periods.
Life as a Frigatebird
It can be a slow one frigatebird life - it takes so long to rear a chick frigatebird that birds can not mate every year, and it is a common sight to see as many chicks as their parents
waiting to be fed! Both parents take turns feeding the young for the first three months of their development, and the mother will feed the next eight months.
As they sit waiting for endless hours in the hot sun, frigate birds assume an energy-efficient posture with their heads hanging down, and they're still so that they appear dead. While it may
seem so from a vantage point at Eden Rock, St Barths, it's not the case, when the parent returns, a chick wakes up, bob their heads and scream until the parent opens his mouth. The hungry
young pays its head down the throat of the parent, and finally feeds
